Furnace Won't Turn On? 5 Things to Check Before You Call

When your furnace quits on a cold Ohio morning, it's worth a two-minute check before you pick up the phone. Sometimes the fix is something you can handle yourself.

1. Check the thermostat

Make sure it's set to heat, the temperature is set above the current room temperature, and the batteries aren't dead. It sounds obvious, but it's the single most common "repair" we get called out for.

2. Check the breaker

Furnaces run on electricity even if they burn gas. Find your electrical panel and look for a tripped breaker labeled furnace or HVAC. Flip it fully off, then back on.

3. Check the furnace switch

There's usually a switch that looks like a regular light switch on or near the furnace itself. Someone may have flipped it by accident. Make sure it's on.

4. Check the filter

A clogged filter can cause the furnace to overheat and shut itself down as a safety measure. If your filter looks gray and packed, replace it and try again.

5. Check the gas

If you have other gas appliances, make sure they're working. If nothing gas-powered is running, the issue may be with your gas supply rather than the furnace.

Still nothing?

If you've run through all five and your furnace still won't fire, it's time to call. We answer emergency calls 24 hours a day across Amherst and Lorain County. Don't sit in the cold, give us a ring.
